A selection of the best animated shorts from last year and this year’s Reel Sisters Festival followed by a workshop on the craft of animation presented by four of the filmmakers. The audience had the unique opportunity to hear first hand about the process of character creation, storyboarding, 3D animation and more.

Cliff Frazier tribute

An evening with award-winning film director Neema Barnette and special guests for a screening of Civil Brand in memory of Cliff Frazier, co-founder of the Dwyer Cultural Center with Ademola Olugebefola. A pioneer, Cliff Frazier was a renaissance man in film, theater and art who mentored hundreds of young artists. He was an institution builder whose Dwyer Cultural Center helped train many artists in film and television. The event will be held at the Dwyer Cultural Center, 258 St. Nicholas Ave. in Harlem.

Black Girl, directed by j.e. franklin, celebrates the aspirations of three generations of women who strive for a better life. Billie Jean has dropped out of school and secretly taken a job as a dancer in a local bar, her ultimate goal is to become a ballet dancer. Billie Jean must fight a multiplicity of challenges, family issues, sex, racism and classism to win an education and forge her own identity.

Lifted screened in Reel Sisters 2007 season to a sold out audience with an emotionally charged conversation around self-care and parenting. Infused with dance, magical realism and inspiration, Randall’s exceptional storytelling and directing makes Lifted one of Reel Sisters all time favorite films celebrating a strong Black woman lead character.
