Anjanette Levert works in the documentary sphere as a filmmaker, producer, curator, coach and professor at Spelman College where she received the 2022 Excellence in Teaching Award and is the Director of the Documentary Filmmaking Program. She recently added podcaster to her titles creating “Future Forward” a limited series podcast of BIPOC documentary filmmakers imagining their future after the pandemic on youtube. She is the Producer of The Only Doctor by Matthew Hashiguchi and the Associate Producer for Black Voters Matter by Daresha Kyi, Produced by Trevite Willis.
Before joining the founding team of the documentary filmmaking program at Spelman, she was the Associate Director of the Documentary Forum at City College of New York, one of the oldest film programs in the United States. Founded, along with noted Documentary Filmmaker, Dr. Andrea Weiss (Bones of Contention and Paris was a Woman), the Documentary Forum exhibited and supported BIPOC documentary filmmakers through screening their films, programming that continued their education and industry networking opportunities.
Levert is an alumni of the Southern Producers Lab (run by the New Orleans Film Festival/Society), the Sundance Producers Intensive and the New York Foundation of the Arts Emerging Leaders Program.. She was a panelist for the 2022 Sundance Producers Summit and 2021 NYWIFT Finance Summit. She’s a long-time programmer, curator and moderator for New York City’s Third World Newsreel’s evening programs.
She’s developing a new interview podcast featuring BIPOC documentary filmmakers about the craft of documentary filmmaking in their films as well as their careers. Also in development is an artist retreat in Atlanta, GA to be called, The Stonehouse. Last, but not least she is re-establishing the Atlanta doc filmmaker networking and screening series that was paused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Atlanta Doc Crew.
