Mitchell \ndocumentary\, 34 min. \nFrom Producer Ben Crump. America’s first hate group\, the Ku Klux Klan\, dealt out hatred and violence for over a century without penalty – until five Black women and a young Black civil rights lawyer finally forced them to pay for their crimes. In Oakland\, CA this means there are often NO Black people in the jury pool. In California\, jurors are only paid $15 per day\, making jury service financially impossible for many working and low-income members of the community. \n  \n \nResilience\nProducer/Director: Julia O’Farrow \n10 min.\, documentary \nI have an on-going project “Tee-shirt tales” which examines stories behind tee-shirt wearers and creators. In an era of political unrest and economic insecurity\, Americans question American cultural and socio-political identity. Filmmaker Roxana Walker-Canton connects present political and economic struggles to a long history of African American protest against racial discrimination and disenfranchisement. One Town At A Time uses one small New England town’s struggles to change local politics to show the power of local organizing and the power of the ballot. If you want change in your community\, you have to have a stake in the game.
